  Adaptive English Language Teaching Tool

The importance of English language cannot be denied in the cultural and social setting of Pakistan. A Pakistani student needs good reading, writing and oral skills pertaining to English language in order to find good jobs in the local and global market.  In order to meet the growing demands for good English language teachers and language training institutes, a new English language teaching methodology is introduced through the "Adaptive English Language Teaching Tool" Project.

The project is funded by National ICT R&D Fund and it is being developed through collaboration of the following organizations

  • National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, (FAST NU), Lahore responsible for software development

  • Institute of Education, Punjab University Lahore, (IER), responsible for developing the contents of teaching material

  • National College of Arts, Lahore, (NCA), responsible for developing multi-media content for presentation in the software

The goal of this project is to develop a computer-aided language learning system for imparting English language skills to the students of class IX. Teaching materials and lessons will be developed in light of the aims and objective set out in the "National Curriculum of Pakistan", developed by the Ministry of Education. The project proposes to develop English Language Teaching Software and tools using a multi-modal interface with examples and illustrations which are relevant to our local and cultural setting. Also, to make this tool an effective medium of instruction, some of the examples and text will be in Urdu, which is a feature not present in most of the existing English language teaching software. This tool will be based on the state of the art techniques in artificial intelligence and human computer interface for intelligent user modeling and profiling.

The main objectives of the project are the following:

  • Develop and evaluate culturally appropriate teaching materials for English language based on the National Curriculum.

  • Investigate user modeling techniques for e-Learning systems

  • Develop effective e-Learning and evaluation systems for English language learning, extensible to other languages and subjects.

  • Evaluate and propose changes to the currently taught syllabus and methodology to incorporate e-Learning based teaching.
