A
Sindhi word in the dictionary could be searched by providing either Sindhi
script or English Transliteration in the text box.

In order to look up a word in Sindhi script, write
Sindhi word in the textbox, select the “Sindhi Word” option and click Search
button, as shown in Figure-1. A Sindhi word can also be typed by using an
On-Screen Keyboard available on the site.
In order to search a word based on its English
Transliteration, write the equivalent Transliteration of the Sindhi word
in the textbox, select ‘English Transliteration’ option and click Search
button, as shown in Figure-2. Guide on English Transliteration can be found

For search results, the dictionary shows
full entry of the word found. The result against each entry gives a brief
meaning, English transliteration and part-of-speech. In case where the look up
word matches more than one word in the dictionary, the search-results will
present a list of matched words. For example, a search for word
“ٿڪ” will generates two results as shown in Figure-3 below.

In case the searched word is not present in
the dictionary, it displays a message that given word is not found.
The Word
Index feature can be accessed from home page or menu link. It provides a
complete list of words starting from a specific Sindhi letter. For example, the
letter ‘خ’ will display list of words as
shown in Figure-4 below. By clicking on any word, complete details against a
word can be viewed.
The
Part-of-Speech (POS) Word Index feature can be accessed from menu link. It
provides complete list of words with specific POS. For example, the POS
‘Adverb’ will display all words that are Adverb, as shown in Figure-5 below. By
clicking on any word, complete details against a word can be viewed.
Each entry in the dictionary starts with
orthographic form of Sindhi word in Sindhi script. English Transliteration
against each Sindhi word is also provided within parentheses. For example,
format for a sample headword entry is mentioned below:
(varzasha) وَرزَشَ
In addition, different variant forms of a word
are shown with their English Transliteration. Synonyms, Antonyms and Idioms for
a word are listed with their equilient English transliteration. Each entry
also provides all parts-of-speech under which grammatical features, inflected
forms and meanings are given.
An
On-Screen Sindhi Keyboard is provided for typing words in Sindhi script. To use
the keyboard, click on the ‘Sindhi Keyboard’ image available on the main page,
as shown in Figure-7 below.

Sindhi script can be directly typed through
computer keyboard if Sindhi language and Sindhi locale is installed on the
machine.

The
Sindhi English Dictionary comprises of more than 2,000 words taken from Mewaram
Parmanand’s Sindhi-English Dictionary (1866-1938, non-copyrighted), which
presents Sindhi words in the Sindhi-Arabic script. The word structure for each
Sindhi entry consists of variants, synonyms, antonym, part of speech,
inflections, grammatical features and English senses. The digital dictionary
for Sindhi addresses research and pedagogical needs related to the Sindhi
language. It can be used as a basic reference for scholars and students who
want to access Sindhi literature on the web.
