  Computational Linguistics

  Objective

The course is aimed for computer scientists to develop an understanding of linguistics and how it may be modeled and processed using computational techniques. The course will focus on modeling words and phrases, with some reference to higher structures, including meaning. Challenges associated with multilingual text processing and their solutions will also be addressed. In addition, the disciplines of morphology, syntax and semantics will be introduced to provide the requisite background but will not be covered in depth. End-user applications will be covered as well, to put the contents of the course into real perspective. Processing will be focused on English and Urdu, though references to other languages will also be made where necessary.
